Avoid the Road to Pessimism

A cynic is a man who, when he smells flowers, looks around for a coffin. ~L. Mencken

It is a struggle to remain positive for people who have been historically cynics. They intellectually understand exactly why they want to embrace the lighter side of life, but they are fighting against a current of old, negative behaviors and thought patterns. As a result, it requires constant attention to begin to break away a path to positivity, and it is always tempting to go down the well-paved road of cynicism.

So how does one make sure they keep on track to their positive lifestyle? This guide will help all you cynics out there win the struggle against the negativity which always seems to be looming.

Define Your Mission

One of the most basic parts of the process of avoiding negativity is specifically defining your motivation for doing so. You can make a list of things you want to achieve by living more positively, or you can just choose something as simple as one word. Whatever your motivation make sure to write it down! This way whenever you feel yourself slipping back into the path of negativity, you’ll have a concrete means to remind yourself of why you’re trying to become more positive in the first place.

Set Specific and Achievable Goals

This may sound cynical of us, but chances are if you have a habit of thinking in a negative manner, that you are not going to be able to change those thought patterns overnight. That is why it is better to take it one baby step at a time to eventually make the big changes that you want in your life. For example, you could start with something like giving yourself and other people a certain amount of compliments a day. This little change of positivity will do more to shift your way of thinking for the better than you can even conceive. Once this is a habit you can add on more changes, but try to ingrain each goal before moving on to the next to make your change manageable.

Be Mindful You’re Work Towards Those Goals

Changing your perspective of the world is a HUGE undertaking. Like any major change, it takes consistent effort to really make a difference. Make sure that you try to work on your path towards positivity daily. Consistent effort daily over the course of a year is better than dedicating to something 24/7 for a week.

Avoid Negativity like the Plague

Anything or anyone negative in your life will need to be limited or cut out altogether, because negativity is contagious whether you are a positive person or not. Cynics tend to drag everyone down around them or at least try to, and it can be a very draining experience whether it is music, a movie or a person. Try to grasp onto more positive form of entertainment and socialization that lift you up rather than drag you down. This may be a bummer at first, but in the long run, you’ll see the wisdom behind not exposing yourself to negativity intentionally.

Don’t Get Discourage

Don’t let the old cynic take over you! When we sink into cyclical patterns of negative thinking and get discouraged. Instead try to remember there will be setbacks in any journey worth taking. So every time you catch yourself slipping down the road of negativity, remind yourself that this experience is just a lesson. Every mistake is something you learn, so you can avoid encountering the same problems in the future.

Conclusion on the Battle for Positivity

There is nothing easy about the task you are undergoing. If it were easy, it’d probably wouldn’t be worth putting forth all of this effort. Embrace the challenge and the transformation you’ll be experiencing as you work towards a new way of life. Before you know it, you’ll be thinking more positively as a habit. When this time comes, you’ll laugh at yourself for the way you used to perceive the world and how much it held you back. It is time for a new life, ne dreams and a new you, so keep on fighting the good fight!
